This time last year I had started my journey as a ‘Seeker’, someone looking into Freemasonry. The term itself is what my District uses, terms may vary. However, as I stated, it’s when I started my journey, not started merely looking at Freemasonry. That began several years prior with conversations with my uncle who is also a Freemason.
We exchanged a few words, I asked a few questions, and the conversation was put to rest. That was three years ago. Three years ago Freemasonry did not want me. That may seem strange to those that don’t wear the aprons. We talk a lot about how in Freemasonry, or Masonry the man becomes curious, and seeks out a meeting or a conversation with a Mason, and the journey begins. I did that, so why did my journey not begin then, two years ago?
Because Masonry was not looking for me. I was looking for Masonry. I wanted Masonry to be an answer for something missing in my life. I wanted Masonry to take me from where I was, and make into something I was not. Masonry takes “good men and makes them better.” Three years ago, I thought I was good man, my outward appearance, actions, and such made ME think I was, Masonry did not. Three years ago had I tried to petition a Lodge, and become a Mason, I would have let my Brothers down, thus letting myself down. I would have walked away saying that Masonry was not for me, and shunned it to anyone looking at it later on.
This time last year, Masonry found me. It reached out, and guided me to its loving arms, and embraced me, it showed me how good men can achieve so many things. It showed me how people look and act when they see a Freemason amongst them. Masonry took me in, and told me that I am a good man, and that I was to be made better by it’s words and teachings. It told me that I would find comfort and friendship amongst those that I barely knew.
When I say that Freemasonry finds you, it’s because if you are truly meant to be a Freemason, your heart will lead you to a Brother, to a Lodge, and finally to a petition. You will fill out that petition without a second thought, and Freemasonry will accept you, and teach you, and love you.
For Freemasonry to find you, it has to look past your physical being, and look within your soul to see if you are ready. If Freemasonry is ready to accept you, you will know.
